Lupus Underground
A patient’s case for a long-ignored, drug-free, non-patentable, counter-intuitive therapy that actually works By Anthony DeBartolo When Lupus Underground was
published in
November of 2004, the working assumption was that the only road to FDA
approval for the treatment of SLE with UVA1 Phototherapy ran through
Dr. Hugh McGrath's lab. McGrath is the rheumatologist who did the
groundbreaking research, initial clinical studies and pioneered
this method (and his work, we are pleased to report, continues).
Fortunately, this assumption was wrong for one, and things have changed considerably since the book's publication for another. There is another road to FDA approval and that involves getting the required equipment approved. And there are plans today by at least one phototherapy equipment manufacturer to do just that. That said, you don't need to wait. You can use this method today "off-label," as the vast majority of drugs used to treat lupus are prescribed today, because UVA1 Phototherapy has already been approved by the FDA for select autoimmune skin disorders, and is being used off-label for several more. To do so for lupus you need a prescription, either to gain access to the slowly growing number of hospitals and clinics who have acquired suitable equipment, or for the Philips TL10R 100 watt lamps to assemble a home unit. You can read more about that in the "UVA1 Phototherapy" thread posted in the "Lupus Treatments" forum on the LFA patient message board.
